Influence of soil mulching and covering of plants on air temperature in production of lettuce

Abstract
Goal of this research was to determine air temperature 10 cm above soil during mulching, direct covering of plants using agrotextile and indirect covering using low tunnels from polyethylene foil. Tested treatments were set up in the open field, in a high-profile tunnel. The investigation was conducted during fall and spring production of lettuce. The measurements were used to form a data-base to help determine average daily temperatures, as well as to analyze current daily values of air temperature in the morning and afternoon hours for each individual treatment. The monitoring of yield for fall and spring lettuce production indicated a substantial yield increase at the onset of the vegetation cycle for the treatments covered with agrotextile and polyethylene foil, while with the non-covered treatments this increase took place by the end of the cycle.
